Week 15: Remix Culture

Week 15: Video Remix

Internet Culture is interesting. Over the years it has gotten more interesting. I have noticed that people care a lot about their freedoms. Online people want their opinions to be heard whether they’ve asked or not. Sometimes the things they say are wild, which shows a fearless side of them. I think the risks on the internet comes with being out of line because there can be consequences. The cool thing about internet culture is there are so much influence and creativity on it.

Copyrighting is working as it is. I have seen a lot of original content have trademarks to avoid copyright issues. I have seen some songs on youtube videos get pulled from the site because the video includes the song. Then you get a copyright claim, so it is doing its job. I think it’s going strong as is.

The license I have chosen is the attribution license which is the one that allows for commercial work as long as I’m credited. I picked this one because it still gives me credit for my work. For my remix, I decided to remix and old concert video I had. This video was from my archive I was going through all of these videos and decided to edit one so it can look differently. I edited the video on my iPhone by using the editing options like the brightness, the contrast, the saturation, etc. Below I have attached a photo of my editing process. I wanted to remix this video because I miss concerts and this video is one of my favorites. Plus I wanted to put my spin on it. I randomly picked the settings, and I liked how it turned out. I liked the colors and it looks like the opposite of the original. It looks like a negative of the original. My remix is sone visually and sonically.

Week 14: Artist Conversation #5

Week 14

Artist Conversation with Kiyomi Fukui

All photos are off of Kiyomi Fukui’s website.

Artist: Kiyomi Fukui
Exhibition: The Green Thumb Project
Media: Mixed Media
Gallery: Online Art Gallery
Website: http://www.kiyomifukui.com/
Instagram: kiyomimiz

Kiyomi Fukui is a Japanese-American artist from Long Beach, California. She received her MFA from California State University Long Beach and her focus were on printmaking. She received her BFA from La Sierra University and her focus there was Graphic Design. Fukui has a strong background in mixed media as she versed in mixed media. Fukui’s work explores the ideas of connection, intimacy, family, love, vulnerability, and explores other personal experiences in their work. Fukui has done many is exhibitions during the past couple of years.

Fukui’s artwork is personal to her which makes it special. I liked the honesty of her artworks. Her artwork is also beautifully done. She did present many art pieces to the class this past week via zoom. The one work that I liked was the Green Thumb Project. With this project, Fukui made an autobiographical piece about her mother. Her mother passed away due to cancer. Before she did Fukui made a mold of her thumb. She kept that mold and ended up making a mold her own thumb. These are molds were so detailed. They were cast out of paper mache and paper scraps. She then embedded a seed in the mold and planted them. Later the seed began to sprout! This is such a powerful metaphor for growth and the cycle of life. Fukui explained it as, “spreading into other spaces and seeing the process of her growing.” I loved how each mold was placed in different settings to see the whole aspect of the project.

As I said earlier, Fukui’s artwork touches on her own personal experiences with her family. This then leads to her exploration of the topics of connection and intimacy. Her work showcases her own personal growth as well as her growth as an artist. She cast her molded thumbs and turned them into growing seeds which is a great idea. Over Zoom she explained how these personal experiences affected her and her artwork. She mentioned that all her artwork is personal to her and that’s where she gets inspiration from.

Overall, I enjoyed this artist’s conversation even though it was done via zoom! I felt like even though it was on a Zoom call I still got to know Fukui as an artist and as a human. she was open about her life and her life. I liked how to openly went to her website to explain all of her work. I liked how diverse her artwork was because it shows how much she loves to work on her craft. Artists like her are cool becasue she tells important stories. Artists like her are telling their own stories and sharing their creations with the world. It’s a lovely thing to see.

Week 14: Graffiti

Week 14: Bubble Letters

My experience drawing bubble letters reminded me of drawing as a kid. I remember learning about bubble letters in my boys and girls club. Below I documented my process.

I messed up the first time, so I restarted my drawing.
The back is where I messed up and the front is where I continued my drawing.
The drawing completed with the sketched in the back.
A photo of me erasing my sketches.
The bubble drawing is complete…almost.
Added some color and now it’s finshed!

I missed up in the beginning and had to redo my drawing. I started off with a pencil sktech of my name. Then I went to retrace my sketch again to create bubble letters. Once I got the letters done, I traced the outline over with a marker. After that I erased my outlines to to see how it looks. I added a pop of color to my name as well. My favorite color is purple, so I colored in my name with purple and added the black outline to make it pop.

Week 13: Sustainable Art

Week 12: Art can be Sustainable?

Art can defenitly be sustainable. During these times artist are finding new ways to be creative. My idea was using the medium of photography. Since we can take walks outside I decided to take some photos to document my walk. Here they are!

What was your idea?

My ideas for this assigment was making art by avoiding throwing away my art piece. I also realized all my miscellaneous items were thrown away due to spring cleaning at my apartment. So I wante to create art with zero waste. I wanted to capture the stillness of the world outside when allowed. I wanted to capture a soft and

What materials did you choose?

The materials I used were my phone camera and this dispoable camera app. The disposable camera app works like a real disposable camera. I love talking film photos, but since we in a pandemic I am limted to that. So this apps allows you to take photos and they develop at 9am the next day.

Do you think your piece was able to express your idea?

I did capture a vintage feel to my photos that shows the stillness of the world. The colors of the photos looked great and the disposable app gave it more depth.

How did your choice of materials influence the experience of your artwork?

I knew I wanted to create something with zero waste. So the first thing I thought of was pictures on my phone. There were no excess materials used for this project. I know I will appreciate these photos for a good time. They all came out great.

How long should a kiss last?

If it’s memorable a kiss should last forever!

How long should a great meal last?

A great meal should last as long as it takes you to eat it. Then you can go back to get more whenever you please.

How long should a work of art last?

A work of art can last forever as well. It’s captures a specific moment in time. This work art can be in museumes or in homes for generations of people to see.

How long should a marriage last?

A marriage should also last a lifetime as the two people trust and love each other in union.

How long should a human life last?

A human life should last as long as possible. I want to live for as long as I can to explore the world, enjoy life’s moments, and appreaciate the earth.

Does the fact that some things, like ephemeral artworks and human lives, have a finite time and then are gone make a difference in the way we experience them?

These types of things defenitifly have an effect on how we experience them. Things that have finite time are valued more. We tend to spend more time with these things and appreciate it’s existence. We are careful not to get rid of them too early so we can experience them in full.

Should other things, like clean water, air, and land be sustainable and long lasting?

These things can be sustainable and long lasting. Moving forward I would love to see a world where these things become a priority and we find ways to make the sustainable and help the planet.

Can one person, like you, make a difference in a global problem like Climate Change?

One person like me can make a difference. It’s small things that go a long way. I stopped using single use plastice water bottles and now use a resusable bottle. When going out to eat or in public I try to be mindul of my waste and pick up some trash that wasn’t thrown away. I also try to donate to organization that help the planet.

Week 12: Virtual Art Gallery

Week 12: The Internet is an Art Gallery

For my virtual art gallery, I went on to Facebook! I couldn’t fully access some of the gaming sites, becasue of my computer and some pixelation that happened when taking the photos. Everyone on Facebook does play a role in a sense by showing their lives, showing their art, or sharing posts. On Facebook, I found three artists that represent the theme of “Being Lonely.”

I chose the theme of “Being Lonely” because I believe we are all dealing with loneliness away. Currently, the world is living inside their homes. I feel like we are experiencing some loneliness during this time. The streets and the cities are empty and only one person is out at a time. Some people are living by themselves during these tough times so I wanted to highlight that.

On Facebook, I am apart of a group of film photographers where art is always shared. All of the photos I chose are from different photographers around the world. These photos represent the idea of loneliness. Being lonely means having no company. These photos encompass that feeling of loneliness.

These two photos were taken by Hunter Kelley in New York. He calls these photos Ghost Town. I love seeing the emptiness in the photos. They look cinematic and give an “end of the world” feeling. In the photo on the left, I see lonely streets. Not a single person is on them. On the photo on the right, I see one person, and they are by themselves without company. The dark brown, grey, black, and white colors take over the majority of both photos. These photos feel like they’re stills from a movie. These images are powerful in feeling. The shadows in these photos make it more dramatic and give it these two photos embody the feeling and theme of “Being Lonely.” A quiet city with no traffic noise is a lonely city missing the daily noise.

In the next set of photos, Felix Russell-Saw took photos in his neighborhood. He calls these photos, “Quarantine Portraits.” The people in these photos are friends of Saw. Since the United States is under a Stay at Home order, during Fox’s walks he takes photos of people at their homes. These two give such a natural feel. Both of these people are by themselves in their home. The photo on the left, the person is looking outside their window. It seems like it was caught candidly. So does the second photo on the right with the person sitting at their window. Both of these people are by themselves in their homes. They embrace their lonesome feeling. The earth tone colors are light in both of these photos. These two photos are a moment in time that would be remembered forever.

In the last group of photos, Niles Karlson took photos of the ocean titles, “Just Keep Breathing.” These photos are calming to look at. The light tones bring a sense of peace to the viewer’s eyes. The different shades of blue, grey, and white are dominant in the photos. these photos capture the feeling of the ocean so perfectly. I like how the ocean separated itself into the sky. In some photos, there is a definite line with a yellow aura dividing the two. The ocean is a vast place lonely place. These photos encompass the lonely feeling because the oceans are by itself past the shore. The ocean moves by itself and just flows. It brings a sense of serenity due to its lonely peaceful movements.

Week 11: Vlogging Activity

Week 11: Being Yourself

My Vlog!

What was your goal with your video?

For this video, I wanted to show the world what a day is like in quarantine for a student. I know it’s different for many people so I wanted to show my perspective. Everyone is dealing with this time differently so I wanted to show what I was doing.

Did you accomplish your goal? Why? Or why not?

I think I did accomplish my goal. I tried to take a video of all the activities wanted to show in my vlog. I took videos of me doing my assignments, classwork, watching my zoom lecture, and the food I ate. I showed my day as much as I could.

What would you do differently next time?

Next time I would film even more videos of my day or film more content for my vlog. Since I don’t vlog, I don’t think about filming everything. It didn’t really cross my mind because I didn’t know if certain activities were something of interest. I would also add title cards, designs in my video, or better transitions.

Do you think you’ll ever vlog again?

I probably will vlog again! It was a fun experience and definitely something out of my comfort zone. It was fun to film my day. Plus this project was cool to film and edit.

Who is your favorite YouTuber? (not counting heyit’smay, Emma Chamberlain, Natalie Tran, or any of the YouTubers on this page)

I do enjoy watching vlogs on youtube during my free time. Some of my favorite Youtubers are David Dobrik, BestDressed, Jenn Im, Amy Lee, Megan Batoon, Arden Rose, Rachel Nguyen, and Will Smith.

What about their work appeals to you?

All of the youtubers I watch have great editing skills. They know how to add the cool editing in bits that really tie the video together. Each video has its own purpose which I like because I am aware of what I’m about to watch. Some of the youtubers I watch have topics for each video so it’s nice to listen and hear someone else’s perspective.

What lessons can you take from their work to apply to your own vlogging?

Some lessons I can take from their work is to have fun, know your audience, and be proud of the content you put out.

What is Authenticity?

Authenticity is being real and genuine. Knowing to not fake or lie about anything instead be 100% yourself.

What is Performance?

A performance isn’t necessarily a lie, but instead a staged or planned version of your life.

Are Authenticity and Performance opposites? Or can they exist together? Explain!

I think authenticity and performance are opposites. In order to be authentic, you have to be real with yourself and your audience. You have to show the good and the bad. If you are performing, then you hide certain information from the audience and make sure you keep your image the same.

Below are 2 clips of Jennifer Aniston on the Jimmy Kimmel show – one in the studio and one from home during the coronavirus pandemic. Do you think either clip is more authentic? Is either more performative? Why or why not?

I believe these two videos are great examples. I see Aniston’s at home video more authentic than her on the show. The reason is that she is being more open and honest at a time like this. When celebrities go on these late-night shows, they usually have something to promote and are somewhat in a controlled environment. Aniston’s at home interview shows that celebrities are just like us and it breaks the wall of separation.

Week 10: Artist Conversation #4

Week 10

Artist Conversation with Mahsa Soroudi

Artist: Mahsa Soroudi
Exhibition: 7,500 Miles
Media: Art and Architecture
Gallery: Nature’s Cadence
Website: https://www.mahsasoroudi.com/
Instagram: n/a

Mahsa Soroudi is an an artist and independent art curator. The Tehran born artist recieved her BFA in Visual Communication in 2006 at Azad Art and Architecture University, Tehran. According to Soroudi. “Terhan” is the art captial in Iran filled with lots of museums, galleries, and artwork. She was exposed to art when she was young by her father. She then found interest in the medium. I learned that Soroudi and her sister are both artists! One of her main projects was to bring light to Irian artists and it’s meaning.

Soroudi obtained their BFA here at Azad Art and Architecture University, Tehran. This university was one od the best art schools in Iran. Her focus is on projects uplifting Iranian voices and artwork as well her own personal experiences. Soroudi’s work explores the ideas of growing up, settling in new places, paying respesect to her roots, and uplift fellow Iranian artists.

Soroudi’s work is very personal to her as she has experienced a lot of life so far. I’ve always liked personal stories in art. These types of artwork are powerful because they tell a story and have a meaning. The art showcased in the 7,500 Miles gallery is bold and dynamic. There are various types of mediums like paintings, drawings, metals, and photography. There are colorful and different from the art I’ve seen before. Each piece of art is unique and tells stories of connection. For example, Mahshid Asoudehkhah explores colorful works of her childhood in paintings. These paintings have small faces in them. These faces can represent a childhood memory or parental. I loved how the colors blend together which creates a feeling of nostalgia.

As I said earlier, Soroudi’s artwork touched on her personal experiences during her life in Iran and wanted to show the artworks of others. I think it’s important to showcases various artworks because each work tells a different story and has a different perspective on growing up in Iran. The art in the 7,500 Miles showcases the culture of Iran. The reason why Soroudi ended up calling the gallery 7,500 miles is becasue that is the distance from California to Iran. The distance signifies how far she is form her hometown. Even though she is far away, she will always remember her roots and where she came from.

Overall, I enjoyed this artist’s conversation! We are at different times right now and this was a cool experience for an artist conversation. The conversation with Sorudi was in-depth with her culture, her upbringing, and her artwork. I liked how she wanted to help share the artworks of others. I thought that was a great quality and her message was powerful. I loved how she wanted to express gratitude to her roots and reflect on how far she has come. Using her platform to share other’s art is great and shows how passoinate she is.

Week 10: Cognitive Maps & Automatic Drawing

Week 10: Art is a good way to Talk to Your Brain

My experience with drawing the CSULB campus was interesting. Especially during a time where we can’t go outside or even step onto campus. I see that I visually tried to see my route to classes. Since I have back to back classes, I realized that I hit all parts of campus in a full day. I also lived in the dorms during my freshman and sophomore year of college so those visuals came to me while drawing this map. The results were great, I ended up remembering more than I thought. I tried to draw the “main” buildings/sites first then work around them. I think if I would have had a bigger piece of paper it would’ve been better and the drawings would have been more accurate.

For the second drawing, I did draw it with my brother. I picked the colors green and blue because I miss seeing these two dominate colors every day. Since we’re staying inside right now I only see these colors through a window. We both gathered two color pencils, grabbed each other’s hand for a couple of minutes, and let the pencils move. This was fun to do because my brother and I both laughed at our hand movements. He was trying to draw something while I was trying to let the pencil go in whatever movement. Again, I think a bigger piece of paper would’ve been better to complete this drawing. But I am glad we still did it. The results look cool, I enjoyed making a unique drawing.

Week 8: Artist Conversation #3

Week 8

Artist Conversation with Sienna Browne

Artist: Sienna Browne
Exhibition: Project of the Palette
Media: Mixed Media
Gallery: Black Umbrella Tattoo and Art Gallery
Website: https://www.siennabrowneart.com/
Instagram: siennabrowneart

Sienna Browne is an undergraduate student at California State University, Long Beach. Browne is in working towards obtaining their BFA here at CSULB’s School of Art. Her focus is on paintings and drawings. Bowne’s work explores the ideas of body dysmorphia, her relationship with food, body empowerment, self-love, connection, and explores other personal experiences in their work. Browne is preparing to a solo exhibition later this month.

Browne’s artwork is very personal to her so that’s where I was immediately intrigued. It seemed like the more her artwork developed over time the more the audience got to know her. She did present many art pieces for class this past week. All of them were different from each other. In some art pieces, the viewer can see growth and development. The one that caught my attention the most was Browne’s Nuudles artwork. All of the art was so detailed. I liked how she showed two different types of Nuudles, one with color and one without. Both have such power and meaning behind it. Browne explains that her Nuudles work explores, “the female psyche, body empowerment, and self-love.” I can see that in her work as there colors red and pink stand out in the colored artwork.

As I said earlier, Browne’s artwork touched on her personal experiences with her body and her relationship with food. Her solo show showcases all over her art throughout the years so the audience gets to see her growth as a person and as an artist via her work. She explains how these personal experiences and thoughts affected her and the way she expressed her emotions was through art. All of her artwork is made from different materials. Her colored Nuudles art is made out of graphic ink onto paper. I have never heard of this type of medium before so it’s cool that she did that. Other works include mixed media paintings, sculpting, drawing, and writing.

Overall, I enjoyed this artist conversation! I felt like I got to know Browne more as an artist and as a human. Browne talking to us students in the class was great because she had a chance to explain all of her work! I liked how diverse her artwork was because it shows how passionate and dedicated she is towards her craft. She was a great person to converse with because she answered the classes’ questions with such poise and grace. Artists like her are cool! They’re telling their own stories and sharing their uniqueness with the world. It inspires me to tap into my creative side.

Week 8: Writing a (romantic) Pop Song

Week 8: Idea 8

Writing a (romantic) Pop Song

Moutains of your love

I don’t know what I’m feeling, But I know I wanna feel everything with you!

Even the word has plans for us. (for us, for us).

Let’s live forever and chase the sunset.

But I know we are worlds apart, and

Your love moves mountains! (oooooouuuu)

Your loves move moutains! (oooouuuu)

But I know we are worlds apart, and

Your love moves mountains! (oooooouuuu)

Your love moves mountains! (oooooouuuu)

And I now know how I feel about you.

I am full of the color blue.

As your eyes would say the same.

My love for you is like no other

There will be no hourglass

No final ding

No final bow

I don’t know what I’m feeling, But I know I wanna feel everything with you!

Even the word has plans for us. (for us, for us).

Let’s live forever and chase the sunset.

But I know we are worlds apart, and

Your love moves mountains! (oooooouuuu)

Your love moves mountains! (oooooouuuu)

But I know we are worlds apart, and

Your love moves mountains! (oooooouuuu)

Your love moves mountains! (oooooouuuu)

And I now know how I feel about you.

What were you trying to think about in your song?

In this song I was thinking about the love I have seen in the movies. Especially in Romantic Comidies these characters show powerful love that somtimes consumes them.

What was your process for writing your song?

My process for this somg started off as a poem. Then it developed from there. I used my imgination to create the rest of the lyrics.

Was it easy? Hard? What you expected? Surprising?

It was actually a bit hard becasue at some point I was a bit lost in lyrics. After doing this myself I have much respect for musicians and their craft. They make it look so easy.

How successful do you think your song is?

I think my song is sucessful. It has some metaphors and romantic underlinings.

Do you think you will ever write another song?

I think I would give songwriting another chance. Maybe next time I will need more than a week to develop.

If you did write another song, what do you think it might be about?

If I did write another song, it proabably would be about the time we’re living in now and the impact of social distancing.
