Week 11: Being Yourself
What was your goal with your video?
For this video, I wanted to show the world what a day is like in quarantine for a student. I know it’s different for many people so I wanted to show my perspective. Everyone is dealing with this time differently so I wanted to show what I was doing.
Did you accomplish your goal? Why? Or why not?
I think I did accomplish my goal. I tried to take a video of all the activities wanted to show in my vlog. I took videos of me doing my assignments, classwork, watching my zoom lecture, and the food I ate. I showed my day as much as I could.
What would you do differently next time?
Next time I would film even more videos of my day or film more content for my vlog. Since I don’t vlog, I don’t think about filming everything. It didn’t really cross my mind because I didn’t know if certain activities were something of interest. I would also add title cards, designs in my video, or better transitions.
Do you think you’ll ever vlog again?
I probably will vlog again! It was a fun experience and definitely something out of my comfort zone. It was fun to film my day. Plus this project was cool to film and edit.
Who is your favorite YouTuber? (not counting heyit’smay, Emma Chamberlain, Natalie Tran, or any of the YouTubers on this page)
I do enjoy watching vlogs on youtube during my free time. Some of my favorite Youtubers are David Dobrik, BestDressed, Jenn Im, Amy Lee, Megan Batoon, Arden Rose, Rachel Nguyen, and Will Smith.
What about their work appeals to you?
All of the youtubers I watch have great editing skills. They know how to add the cool editing in bits that really tie the video together. Each video has its own purpose which I like because I am aware of what I’m about to watch. Some of the youtubers I watch have topics for each video so it’s nice to listen and hear someone else’s perspective.
What lessons can you take from their work to apply to your own vlogging?
Some lessons I can take from their work is to have fun, know your audience, and be proud of the content you put out.
What is Authenticity?
Authenticity is being real and genuine. Knowing to not fake or lie about anything instead be 100% yourself.
What is Performance?
A performance isn’t necessarily a lie, but instead a staged or planned version of your life.
Are Authenticity and Performance opposites? Or can they exist together? Explain!
I think authenticity and performance are opposites. In order to be authentic, you have to be real with yourself and your audience. You have to show the good and the bad. If you are performing, then you hide certain information from the audience and make sure you keep your image the same.
Below are 2 clips of Jennifer Aniston on the Jimmy Kimmel show – one in the studio and one from home during the coronavirus pandemic. Do you think either clip is more authentic? Is either more performative? Why or why not?
I believe these two videos are great examples. I see Aniston’s at home video more authentic than her on the show. The reason is that she is being more open and honest at a time like this. When celebrities go on these late-night shows, they usually have something to promote and are somewhat in a controlled environment. Aniston’s at home interview shows that celebrities are just like us and it breaks the wall of separation.
